A rebuild of the RS-3 done by Morrison Knudsen in the mid-70s, the TE 56-4As featured brand new 251 engines and a short hood forward, low nose configuration. Crew reports say that the units tended to slip, most likely due to the increased horsepower, but the same ballasting. A total of 10 were built for two railroads, two for D&M, and eight for D&H; Only one unit survives, the D&H 506 as 406 on the LA&L in revenue freight.
