U25B

after finally completing the divorce paperwork with alco, ge officially entered the locomotive market with the u25b. hilariously, it managed to be both one of the shortest and the most powerful single motor diesel locomotive in the us when it was introduced. while it sold Pretty Okay For the Time, and scared The Ever Loving Shit Out Of Alco, ge ran into a small design flaw with the u25b: it wasnt powered by a 567. as with most universals, the majority had a very uneventful 13 year lifetime and were promptly scrapped (conveniently at the same time as when ge recommended all universals to be rebuilt with new gensets.) it was superceded by the literally identical u28b when the fdl was fully potty trained.
One of UP's super early ex-demo U25B's, equipped with a high short hood. Note the ladder style steps. One demonstrator (that also went to UP) had the same ladder steps but with a low nose. Photo credit Chuck Zeiler, Flickr
