Protontricks crashes after choosing a game.

Describe the bug
Since I updated from POP 22.04 to POP 24.04 I have had a problem with Protontricks. When I open it and then choose whatever game I need it crashes. I can get it to work if I use the terminal and use this command flatpak run com.github.Matoking.protontricks -vv --gui –no-bwrap
But I believe this problem might be causing problems when trying to installing a new instance of Mod Organizer 2 for Fallout 4 or any other game (I am not asking for help with this just adding info), before I updated to POP 24.04 I installed MO2 for other games with no problems and used Protontricks with no problems.

Steps to reproduce the behavior:

1. Click on Protontricks in apps
2. Choose a game (any game).
3. Program crashes with error

Expected behavior
I choose a game and program does not crash.

System (please complete the following information):

• Distro: POP 24.04
• Protontricks installed from Cosmic store flathub version
• Protontricks version 1.13.1
• Steam version: Steam Beta Branch: Stable Client

There is a directory with the weird name /${env:deb_udevdir} in your root directory. Steam Runtime tries to mount it, but fails due to the : character in the name.

This seems to be a duplicate of #393. Previous user who faced the issue found several udev related files under it, though it's not the correct place for them. Maybe a bug in Debian/PopOS Steam packaging?

You could rename it or remove it to not include the : character. For example, you could run the following to rename it:

sudo mv '/${env:deb_udevdir}' '/${env_deb_udevdir}'

I ran the command and nothing changed, still crashes, I went to /${env_deb_udevdir}/rules.d and there are these files 60-steam-input.rules and 60-steam-vr.rules that were mentioned in the comment you linked but I can't delete the rules.d folder like the comment said, there is no option to. I think the root folder is locked and I can't change the permissions on it.

Looked at logs again and the script itself also seems to be choking on the weird directory name (probably the $ character).

You could rename it to something without any special characters like env_deb_udevdir, or just remove it entirely by running this in the console (you will need administrator rights):

Be careful that you type the command exactly before running it!

sudo rm -rf '/${env_deb_udevdir}'
