Features

Moonfin builds on the foundation of Jellyfin with targeted improvements for the TV viewing experience. Playback specifics live on their own page, see Playback and Codecs.

Multi-server and unified library

  • Emby server support so you can sign in to Emby servers through Emby Connect, not just Jellyfin.
  • Unified Library Mode combines content from all connected Jellyfin servers into a single view.
  • Browse, search, and play across multiple servers, with server badges showing where content came from.
  • Cross-server playback with progress tracked correctly per server.
  • Favorites, genres, and search aggregate results from every connected server.
  • Quick Connect and fast user switching from your avatar, with auto-login and last-server memory.

Seerr integration

Moonfin is the first smart TV client with native Seerr support. Setup goes through the Moonfin server plugin, see Seerr Setup.

  • Browse trending, popular, and recommended movies and shows, filtered by genre, studio, network, or keyword.
  • Add Seerr discover rows (Trending, Popular, Upcoming, My Requests, and more) to your home screen.
  • Request content in HD or 4K directly from your TV, with smart season selection for shows.
  • View all your pending, approved, and available requests.
  • Optional NSFW content filtering using Seerr and TMDB metadata.
  • Global search includes Seerr results, with backdrop images for a cinematic discovery experience.

Navigation

  • Quick access home button and search.
  • Shuffle button for instant random movie or show discovery.
  • Genres menu to browse all media by genre in one place.
  • Dynamic library buttons that populate from your own libraries, so any library or collection is one click away.
  • Folder view with breadcrumb navigation for nested library folders.
  • Built-in photo and comic viewer for image and comic libraries.
  • Samsung Smart Hub Preview lets you jump straight into content from deep-linked cards on the TV's home screen.

Playback and media control

  • Theme music playback for shows and movies, with volume control.
  • Pre-playback track selection so you can pick audio and subtitle tracks before playback starts.
  • Next episode countdown with a skip button when the next episode is available.
  • Trickplay preview thumbnails while scrubbing.
  • Media segment skipping for intros, credits, and other segments.
  • Remote media keys for play, pause, fast-forward, rewind, and stop.
  • SyncPlay for synchronized watch-together playback using Jellyfin's SyncPlay protocol.
  • Subtitle downloads without leaving the app.
  • In-app trailers played right inside Moonfin.
  • Music libraries with lyrics, including albums, artists, playlists, and synced lyrics.
  • OLED burn-in protection through a screensaver that kicks in during paused or idle playback.

Live TV and recordings

  • Electronic Program Guide for browsing live channels with program information, in a much simpler interface.
  • DVR recordings browsing and playback with a single button press.

Details screen

  • Metadata organized into clear sections for genres, directors, writers, studios, and runtime.
  • Taglines shown above the description where available, and cast photos shown as circles.
  • Fits more useful information on screen without feeling cramped.
  • Playlist management to add an item to an existing playlist or create a new one, reorder with left and right, and remove with Delete.
  • Chapters, collections, and media versions so you can jump to a chapter, see which collections a title belongs to, and pick between versions.
  • Extras and special features such as behind-the-scenes clips and trailers, when the server has them.
  • Ratings from Rotten Tomatoes and the community, shown across Browse, Details, the media bar, and libraries.

UI and theming

  • Built with Enact/Sandstone, a React-based framework optimized for TV, with Spotlight navigation.
  • Themes with a full theme system, built-in themes, a Theme Store for community themes, a custom theme menu, and per-device persistence.
  • Accent color customization to personalize the interface.
  • Watched and favorite badges visible right on the cards.
  • Backdrop blur settings for the home and details pages.
  • UI scale to adjust font size for your TV size and viewing distance.
  • Media bar styles with five options (Moonfin, MakD, Gallery, Banner, and Bookshelf), each with auto-advance and smooth transitions.
  • Item details appear in the row, so you do not have to open every title to see what it is.
  • Unfocused buttons are transparent rather than distracting, contrast is better, transitions feel responsive, and icons are consistent throughout.

Performance

  • Automatic performance tuning detects how capable your TV is and dials the heaviest visual effects up or down, so older sets stay responsive while newer ones keep the full look.
  • Performance mode lets you choose the tradeoff yourself between Auto, High Quality, Balanced, and Performance.
  • Lighter visuals on weaker hardware, with background blur reduced or disabled where it would slow things down.
