Frequently Asked Questions

Before trying any of these suggestions for the commonly faced issues, please make sure that your launcher and the game itself are updated to the latest version.

The game's current version is v2.1.0, and the launcher's current version is v2.1.0.

Technical Issues & Troubleshooting

Q: I can't build. I'm getting an error!

A: It seems like reinstalling MSYS2 and deleting the "sm64plus" folder fixes the issues for most people. Disabling your antivirus could also help in some cases.

One other alternative you have is to use sm64pcBuilder2 instead to build the game. You can also just compile the game manually, following the instructions from the Manual Building page. These instructions assume that you have some basic knowledge about how this stuff works.

If these don't help, you can ask for help on our Discord server. That being said, most of the time building issues are caused by MSYS2 and not the port itself. We can't really help you much on that beyond what was already suggested here.

If you do decide to join and ask for help though, do not ask for help without following these steps first, do not DM the server staff members with questions directly, and do not ask us for help about sm64pcBuilder2 or building manually.

Q: I could build, but the game doesn't launch.

A: Try restarting your computer. If that makes no difference you can try rebuilding the game from the main menu, using the "Update" option. If that doesn't work, just start over with the whole building process.

Q: My controller doesn't work in the game. What do I do?

A: The game supports many different types of controllers, but it's impossible to have 100% compatibility with all of them. Here are a few things you can try:

  • You can add the game to your Steam library, which seems to make most controllers work.
  • You can use tools like DS4Windows, BetterJoyForCemu, or 360ce to map them to Xinput, which should also work.

Please keep in mind that 3rd party controller button names not matching their descriptions in the launcher is normal. Just remap your buttons according to that.

Q: How do I fix only Mario appearing completely black?

A: Reset your settings from the presets page. You can find it within the launcher's settings menu as the leftmost page.

Q: The game is running too fast!

A: You can try switching to the OpenGL graphics backend from the launcher. Alternatively, you can also try to limit the game's FPS using Nvidia's control panel or other 3rd party tools. Make sure that you limit sm64.us.f3dex2e.exe's frame rate, and not the launcher's.

Modding / Hacks

Q: Can I use ROM hacks with this?

A: Unfortunately, no. It's not possible to add support for ROM hacks without creating individual versions for every ROM hack out there.

If you really need to play SM64 ROM hacks on the PC port, check this question.

Q: Can I use mods made for other SM64 ports with this?

A: You can install custom texture packs by following the guide here. As for custom models, you can install those easily using sm64pcBuilder2.

There is no official support for other kinds of mods, including audio ones. Check this question to learn more about that.

Q: What about Render96?

A: The official Render96 texture pack works with SM64Plus, with the exception of skybox textures. The models and other features of it are not supported.

Once again maybe give this question a read too.

Suggestions

Q: Can you add *insert feature here*?

A: It depends. I try not to add new assets, like new models, textures, etc., and just use the ones provided by the ROM. I also try not to modify the levels just to keep the scope of the project small.

For other things, feel free to request anything from me on Discord, if I like the idea I might add it in eventually with an update.

Q: Can you add online multiplayer?

A: No.

Adding online multiplayer to any game is already a rather difficult task, but adding it to a game that's not already built with multiplayer in mind is even harder. So that alone would take as much effort as everything else that's already in this fork, combined.

There's also another fork of the PC port that aims to add online co-op into the game, so you might as well try that instead. Check this question if you need a link.

Q: Can you make a Super Mario Sunshine Plus / Ocarina of Time Plus / *insert game here* Plus?

A: Also no.

These fan projects are things I make during my free time, and they do take a lot of effort to make. I can't really take on such a commitment just because a few people asked me to. If I'm already interested in making something, I'll probably make it eventually, if it's possible that is.

"If it's possible" is also the key phrase here. I based my work here on the existing SM64 PC Port and the SM64 Decompilation Project. Things like those simply don't really exist for most games, making my job way harder.

Other

Q: What is the best version of the PC port? Is it this?

A: Not exactly. There are multiple forks of the original PC port of Super Mario 64, and they all make different changes to the base game for different purposes.

The main purpose of SM64Plus is to have an easy way to play the game with QoL improvements that would make it much more enjoyable and accessible in today's gaming landscape, all the while keeping things relatively faithful to the original N64 version. One of my goals was doing all that all the while giving the player full control over what those improvements are. If you want you can even make the game even closer to the original N64 version than sm64-port.

Because of this, there are much better forks out there with different focuses compared to SM64Plus.

To heavily simply...

You can install all these with sm64pcBuilder2.

(Disclaimer: I am only sort of a contributor for Render96ex, and am not associated with the rest at all. Don't blame me if anything happens with them!)

Q: How do I access the hidden settings?

A: In the launcher there are a few pages of settings that are not normally accessible by default.

To access them you have to hold down the backspace key (or the select button of your controller) on the disclaimer screen until the screen goes white. You will then get a message that tells you that you have enabled the hidden categories. You have to do this every time you run the launcher if you want to change any of those settings.

Q: Can I have the logo of the game?

A: Sure. Shoutouts to Benial for doing such a good job with it. :)

Q: Is there Linux or Mac support?

A: The game can be manually compiled for Linux, and a Linux version of the launcher is currently planned. There's not going to be any official Mac support.

Q: Is your game safe?

A: Yeah. If your antivirus is giving you any warnings, it's most likely false. You especially shouldn't trust Chrome as it tends to mark things as suspicious very often for very little reason.

Q: Will Nintendo take this game down?

A: Nintendo hasn't taken down any of the other PC port forks yet, so I doubt it.
