LiPo Wire Preparation

Nick edited this page Jun 3, 2026 · 3 revisions

Here's a quick tutorial on how to convert a lipo with flying leads to one with a connector without needing an expensive crimping tool. We're gonna do a "Western Union splice" and cover it with heatshrink.

Equipment

Battery: LP103048JU+PCM+2 WIRES 70MM

Pre-crimped wire: ASSHSSH28K152

Connector: SHR-02V-S-B

Heatshrink: V2-1.5-0-SP-SM

Procedure

  1. Take the pre-crimped wire I posted above and cut it in half. Trim back a bit further if you don't want the wires super long.
  2. Strip back the insulation on the non-crimped ends a bit less than a half inch. You want it to be shorter than the heatshrink length, use that as a length guide.
  3. Twist the bare wires if there are stray strands.
  4. Remove the plastic sheathe from one of the leads, and strip the insulation back the same length. Leave the other lead covered with the plastic sheathe.
  5. Perform the Western Union splice:

  1. Apply a bit of flux to the splice, and apply solder to make a solid connection.
  2. Slide a piece of heatshrink over the crimped end of the wire to cover the splice, and apply heat to... shrink the heatshrink.
  3. Repeat with the other battery lead.
  4. Place the crimped ends into the JST connector - DOUBLE CHECK FOR POLARITY!
