This method has lost the history. Somehow the history was there before "git mv" and is not there after. |

Hi Ray,
Is there any content in Production that would be lost if you wiped it and started over?

OK, losing the history seems to be normal with git mv. It is there with "--follow".. Is this OK? The method I'm using doesn't obviously have a way to move the directory with keeping the directory. it moves the content out of the directory. Note that I could not get the most modern methods of splitting repos to work, I'd have to download tools. If you want, we could stop and investigate. Rob, nothing in Production needs to be kept, can easily start over |

History is there. After a move you must use:
git log --follow

I just cloned Production and did a git log. I see 956 commits dating back to 2013. I did not need –follow .

The pattern seems to be "git log" without a file name does not need --follow, with a file it does. Do you want me to stop and investigate how to move a whole intact directory rather than insert an unnecessary mv? It might take a few days, talking to experts. |
|
I think this is a transient think. As time goes on we will care less and less about old history. We will only remember to use –follow for short time.

I don't think the final result will change, so I don't think it matters.
