The biggest overhaul to this project since it was created.

With help from Claude Opus 5 Max - agentic coding with hundreds of automated tests in a webOS 3 / Chrome 38 environment.

Size & startup

Removed packages: core-js-pure, @babel/runtime-corejs3, regenerator-runtime, babel-plugin-polyfill-corejs3 and babel-plugin-polyfill-regenerator.

• ~380 unneeded polyfills that don't affect this app were removed from both legacy/modern builds.
• 111kb → 83kb for the modern .ipk, and 190kb → 104kb for the legacy .ipk.
• Dropping from 76kb → 8.7kb on legacy and 3.7kb → 1.3kb on modern, the launcher script (the tiny page that redirects into youtube.com/tv) no longer pulls in code it doesn't use just to build a URL.

Bug fixes

• Fixed Return YouTube Dislike showing 0 (or nothing) on real TVs. On real hardware - not the simulator - a slow first request to the dislike API meant the counter didn't get added to the description panel at all for a couple of seconds, and if that first request failed, the count would get stuck at a permanent 0 with no retry, even though it wasn't real. The counter now shows a placeholder immediately, retries automatically on failure, and fills in the real number as soon as it arrives.
• Fixed emoji rendering being able to corrupt itself. Under specific conditions the legacy emoji-wrapping logic could run twice on the same text and strip out characters it had just inserted. It's now safe to run any number of times on the same text with an identical result.
• Fixed the diagnostics overlay (perf_mon) stealing keys pressed while it was open. Arrow keys pressed while the overlay was visible could also move focus around in the YouTube UI behind it.

Settings behavior changes

• Turning off Ad Blocking no longer silently disables the emoji fix. Previously, disabling Ad Blocking also quietly turned off the legacy emoji rendering fix (which webOS 3/4 needs regardless, or emoji show as empty boxes). The emoji fix now has its own independent switch and keeps working with Ad Blocking off.
• Tracking Block now visibly greys out when Ad Blocking is off, since it depends on the same network hooks and does nothing while Ad Blocking is disabled. This makes it clear the setting isn't silently ignored.

Performance

Everything below was measured before/after with the same test payloads and hardware profile (webOS 3 / Chrome 38 baseline); the app's behavior is unchanged, only the amount of work it does to get there.

• Roughly 60% less overhead on a large home-screen response with everything enabled is now achieved for Ad Blocking / Tracking Block / emoji filtering, as the response-filtering pass over YouTube's data uses far less memory allocation and fewer redundant passes, and a duplicate pass over every shelf's tiles was removed entirely.
• json-stringify.js (used to force better inline playback) no longer scans every object passed to it looking for a match - it recognizes the shape YouTube actually sends immediately and only falls back to scanning for anything unusual.
• Cutting layout and style reads by roughly 80–97%, spatial navigation (remote input) inside the Settings panel is dramatically cheaper: both builds now cache during a navigation, whereas one arrow-key press used to trigger 400+ layout reads and nearly 3,000 style reads on legacy hardware with no caching at all (the modern build already had this cached - legacy didn't). This should be most noticeable as snappier menu navigation on older, slower TVs.
• Opening the Settings panel used to build all four tabs (History, SponsorBlock, Shortcuts, UI Tweaks) up front in one go before the panel could even appear - visible as a stutter/freeze the moment you pressed the button to open it. Only the tab you're looking at is built immediately now; the other three build in the background over the next few frames. Switching tabs still works instantly even if you're faster than the background build.
• Max Thumbnail Quality upgrading had a scaling problem: mounting a shelf of thumbnails could trigger tens of thousands of layout checks because each thumbnail was scheduling its own separate check instead of sharing one. Fixed - same detection behavior, a small fraction of the layout work.
• The Return YouTube Dislike panel no longer runs a CSS selector match on every single focus change anywhere in the app while a video is open; it was doing measurable extra work on every remote press even when the description panel wasn't visible.
• Also fixed: a couple of places where the app couldn't reliably tell "the user pressed a real button" from "this mod pressed a synthetic button internally" on older webOS versions, which could have let internal housekeeping key-presses affect navigation.

What to test

This build touches remote navigation, the Settings panel, and background filtering fairly deeply.

1. Description panel → Return YouTube Dislike. Does the count show up promptly and correctly? Please note your connection quality / region if it's slow or wrong.
2. Green Button Settings panel. Open it, switch between all four tabs quickly and slowly, navigate with arrow keys. Anything feel wrong, laggy, or mis-focused?
3. Max Thumbnail Quality, if you use it - turn it on and scroll the home screen.

Thanks for testing! This was a fun experience using agentic coding for the first time.
It blew me away with the capabilities it has to build its own sandbox running Chrome 38, and optimizing the code down by performing tests and finding regressions as it goes.
This build should run significantly faster on legacy hardware (webOS 3-6) specifically in navigation.
I imagine this build will be in testing for at least a couple weeks before I feel it's safe to release it fully.

I can confirm, the content in the description panel doesn't scroll. On my 55inch, I can see the chapters button with its previews, but they are cut at the bottom. I can still access and then scroll all the chapters though. Below the chapters button, I can access a hidden products button too, depending on the video.

I think it would also be good if he added a tab to customize the player. Like hiding buttons for certain sections, such as Gemini, support, and others. To give a good margin for customization and user preference.

Removing live videos also works in general. But on the subscriptions page this leaves empty space. (That empty space might always be in the right column - at least for me it's that way right now.) Would it be possible to remove the empty space? Edit: I just saw that a whole row can be empty space, when 3 videos in a row are live streams.

Upcoming videos will come soon, I just have to figure out how I want to re-do the settings UI because there are a lot of options, I am thinking the cosmetic filtering section can be made into two columns.

maxres: Forces the JSON response to replace all thumbnails with maxres before the video tiles load. Works for ~95% of thumbnails, but the other ~5% will show an empty gray thumbnail temporarily until a DOM pass sweeps by and fixes it. Improves scrolling performance at the cost of short-term accuracy

hq: loads all thumbnails normally in hqdefault resolution, and then upgrades them to maxres if available. No gray boxes, but is computationally more expensive, and represents the original Max Thumbnail Quality strategy

A) I suggest to use better option names. Nobody understands what "maxres" and "hq" means without the description in this changelog post. Maybe "Immediate" and "Delayed" or something like this? Or "Eager" and "Safe" like you call it in the code.

B) Is there a way to see which thumbnail quality is shown (for each thumbnail)? Because it feels like I get more blurry thumbnails with build 9 than before. And I've not seen a temporary gray thumbnail with the new maxres option yet. So I'm wondering if this even works.

After testing the maxres option on my old webOS 3.9 B7, scrolling performance definitely improved even more.
The response time from starting YouTube until I can navigate with the cursor has also been noticeably reduced on my TV.
As you mentioned in the changelog, I can see empty gray thumbnails, but only very briefly when scrolling down.
