Roadmap: what is next and why

[imshashank]

A triage pass on 2026-09-06 closed or merged about a third of the open issues, so this is the current shape. Argue with the order here rather than on the issues.

Now

1. Self-hosting release gate: Deployment: secure first-owner bootstrap and portable initial authentication #393 first-owner and configuration contract, Deployment: run realtime behind a provider-neutral same-origin WebSocket proxy #391 portable realtime, Deployment: publish production images and a complete Compose stack #392 images and Compose, Operations: prove backup, restore, upgrade, and disaster recovery for self-hosted Orbit #394 backup and restore, Distribution: canonical asset pack and generated catalog metadata #395 assets and catalog metadata. Everything in distribution waits on these.
2. Agents as real participants: Agents as a first class actor, assignable and attributed #215 agent identity, then AI provider configuration: bring your own key and endpoint, off by default #402, Delegate an issue to an agent and let the work come back as a pull request #403, Agent sessions on an issue: progress, questions and completion in the thread #404, Proposed writes: an agent change that a person accepts or dismisses #405, Agent audit and usage: what each grant did, how often, and a one-click revoke #406, with Outbound webhooks #126 outbound webhooks and Add the narrow GitHub lifecycle automation rules #193 git-lifecycle automation underneath.
3. Things that lose or block real users today: Reject stale document saves instead of overwriting another editor #200 doc save conflicts, Finish mobile reading for boards, issues and the inbox #124 the board on a phone, The audit log table is never written to #194 the audit log.

Later or on demand

Initiatives, releases inside Orbit, recurring issues, a chart builder, i18n, and the Slack thread sync are closed as not planned for now and reopen when someone needs them. Custom fields and time tracking have their own threads here.
