Agile project management built for how teams actually work.
PlanA is an open-source project management platform designed for software teams practising Scrum, Kanban, or Shape Up. It combines visual dependency planning with execution tracking in a single tool.
Interactive canvas for modelling project structure and dependencies. Epics are visual containers holding stories and tasks. Draw dependency connectors between items, validate for cycles and resource conflicts, commit changes when ready.
Drag-and-drop board with configurable columns. Enabler badges highlight items that unblock the most work. Story progress bars show task completion. Within-column reordering.
Interactive timeline with draggable bars, dependency arrows, critical path highlighting, target date markers, sprint bands, zoom controls (day/week/month), and a resource allocation panel showing per-member capacity vs workload.
Month-view calendar with items placed by start/due date, filterable by team member. Sprint overlay shows which dates fall within each sprint.
Two views: Flow (dependency-ordered tree with connectors) and Priority (flat list). Cross-navigation to the graph view.
Inline Fibonacci card voting on tasks. Team members vote, distribution is shown live, PM locks the agreed estimate.
Create sprints with auto-calculated dates from project defaults. Track velocity, burndown charts, capacity planning.
Automated readiness checklist for stories: description, acceptance criteria, tasks, estimates, design approval. Progress indicator shows how refined each story is.
Full project export as JSON. Import into a new project with fresh UUIDs and reference remapping. Template mode strips dates, statuses, and assignees for reusable project templates.
26 languages supported. UI adapts to the user's language preference.

Browser → Caddy (HTTPS) → API (Go :8080) → PostgreSQL
→ Web (Vite :5173) Redis
The API runs database migrations on startup. No separate migration step needed.
Development goals for PlanA, informed by competitive analysis against Jira, Linear, Plane, and other Agile tools.
These are the features evaluators look for in the first 10 minutes. Without them, developer teams are likely to pass.
- Git Integration (GitHub / GitLab) - Branch tracking on work items, PR status display, auto-transition on merge, commit linking. This is the single most important missing feature for developer adoption.
- Real-Time Collaboration - Live presence indicators, real-time board updates via WebSockets, co-editing support. Replaces the current polling approach with instant sync.
- Custom Workflow States - Allow teams to define their own status pipeline beyond the fixed six statuses. Required by teams with regulated or non-standard processes.
Features that established tools already offer. Their absence signals immaturity during evaluation.
- Activity Feed & Audit Trail - A filterable stream showing who changed what and when. Supports compliance needs and team awareness.
- Command Palette (Keyboard-First UX) - Cmd+K / Ctrl+K to search, create, and navigate. Linear set this expectation for developer tools.
- Public API Documentation & Webhooks - A documented REST API and outbound webhooks for custom integrations. The path to an ecosystem without needing a plugin marketplace.
Features that lean into PlanA's unique strengths and create separation from competitors.
- Sprint Goal AI - AI-assisted sprint goal generation. Backend groundwork is already in place.
- Release Management - Group completed stories into releases with auto-generated release notes. Bridges the gap between "work done" and "shipped to users."
- Portfolio / Initiative Dashboard - Cross-project initiative tracking with health indicators, cross-team dependency visibility, and roll-up metrics for programme-level oversight.
- Mobile Access (PWA) - A progressive web app covering standup check-ins, quick status updates, and notifications. Covers the majority of mobile use cases without the cost of a native app.
- Plugin marketplace (too early, focus on core)
- Whiteboards / embedded docs (not our fight)
- Time tracking (commodity feature, many dedicated tools exist)
- Deep Figma integration (nice-to-have, not a deal-maker)
