My [Ghostty PR #14506](ghostty-org/ghostty#14506) has been merged!
While investigating occasional pauses when navigating between windows in OmniWM’s Niri layout, I traced the issue to Ghostty’s interaction with macOS window restoration. Even with
window-save-state = never, macOS could still take background restoration snapshots, causing contention with window updates. The fix makes Ghostty fully honor that setting for its windows, including already-open windows when configuration is reloaded.
In my before/after captures, roughly half-second window-update stalls dropped from five to zero, and the slowest measured Ghostty window-frame write dropped from 539.8 ms to 22.5 ms. These were short captures from my setup, so results will vary.
Once you upgrade to a Ghostty release containing this fix, enable it through your Ghostty configuration:
window-save-state = neverIf you already use this setting, upgrading is enough. Otherwise, add it and reload Ghostty’s configuration. This disables native session restoration, so Ghostty won’t restore your saved window, tab, and split layout across launches.
No OmniWM changes are required to benefit. Because the fix is inside Ghostty, it may also help users of AeroSpace, yabai, Amethyst, and other macOS window managers experiencing the same stalls.
Thanks to the Ghostty maintainers for reviewing and merging the fix!
