FileDentify 1.8

Choose a tag to compare

@OnjLouis OnjLouis released this 08 Jul 09:01

FileDentify 1.8 expands the built-in file-type coverage and improves HTML report navigation.

Changes:

  • Expanded Arturia coverage from a full local Arturia sample-library scan, including Augmented-series presets, MiniFreak hardware presets, model/effect presets, SFZ include resources, and Arturia sample/resource payloads.
  • Added Pocket TTS reporting for NVDA speech-engine files, including ONNX model roles, NumPy voice embeddings, tokenizer models, and safe shape/string metadata.
  • Expanded NVDA and Python ecosystem reporting from a full NVDA roaming-folder scan, including installed NVDA add-on manifests, Orpheus language resources, RHVoice parameter files, SentencePiece package data, F2PY/Meson/NumPy build artifacts, Python pickle files, and selected add-on/cache metadata.
  • Added Apple Mach-O binary reporting for macOS dynamic libraries such as .dylib, including universal-binary architecture summaries and safe file-role fields without loading or executing code.
  • Added clickable file links in multi-file report overviews. In the embedded HTML details view they select the target file in the current report; in exported HTML reports they jump to that file's section on the page.

The portable ZIP contains FileDentify.exe, fd.com, and LICENSE.txt.

FileDentify 1.7

Choose a tag to compare

@OnjLouis OnjLouis released this 02 Jul 15:18

FileDentify 1.7 expands the built-in FileDentify database again, with more real-world coverage from large-folder audits and more careful handling of ambiguous extensions.

Highlights:

  • Added clearer SQLite-family handling for .sqlite, .sqlite3, .db, and .db3 files, including safer mismatch logic for valid .db3 databases.
  • Added browser and mail-profile coverage, including Thunderbird .wdseml snippets, .msf indexes, Firefox/Thunderbird .jsonlz4 data, and Mercury/32/Pegasus Mail support files.
  • Added more music-production, system, developer-resource, speech, playlist, help, antivirus, AppCache, BeebEm/Torch MCP, and Stylus RMX/Korg controller-scene formats.
  • Refined Steinberg/VST reporting so plug-in DLLs with VST SDK strings are not misreported as Cubase projects.
  • Improved readable-text extraction for older high-bit ASCII files, reducing misleading short tail fragments.
  • Split the built-in manual source so the codebase remains easier to maintain as the supported-format table grows.

The portable ZIP contains FileDentify.exe, fd.com, and LICENSE.txt. The built-in F1 manual remains the user documentation source of truth.

FileDentify 1.6

Choose a tag to compare

@OnjLouis OnjLouis released this 01 Jul 18:04

FileDentify 1.6 expands FileDentify's own built-in file-type database and makes those results clearer in reports.

Highlights:

  • Added a FileDentify database section near the top of reports when FileDentify-specific rules identify a file, so generic signature results no longer undersell a useful match.
  • Expanded real-world format coverage from local software, production-audio, TV/music, game, support-resource, and extensionless-file scans. See the built-in manual's Supported file types table for the maintained coverage list.
  • Added and refined reporting for Roland Fantom Librarian, Yamaha S-YXG, OpenAL spatial-audio, BBC Micro / BeebEm media, Gravis UltraSound vs Synology .pat files, legacy production-audio resources, Winamp / LibreOffice / Chromium support files, Sound Designer II, Cool Edit / Adobe Audition, Windows Media playlists, raw MPEG audio, and more.
  • Expanded Native Instruments reporting from a full Komplete library audit, with clearer product and role hints for Kontakt, Battery, Reaktor, Maschine, Guitar Rig, Komplete Kontrol, and related preset/resource files.
  • Audited notes across newer FileDentify-specific sections so obscure formats explain their likely product, platform, or purpose while staying honest about proprietary payloads FileDentify does not decode.

The portable ZIP contains FileDentify.exe, fd.com, and LICENSE.txt. README.md is intentionally not shipped; the built-in manual is the user documentation.

FileDentify 1.5

Choose a tag to compare

@OnjLouis OnjLouis released this 30 Jun 16:02

FileDentify 1.5 expands the real-world file-type coverage and improves day-to-day workflow.

Changes:

  • Expanded audio-library, macOS-resource, plug-in, application-support, and system-library coverage from real sample scans.
  • Added richer VST3 module metadata, including module name, vendor, class/category, subcategory, class ID, and version fields where moduleinfo.json is present.
  • Added focused audio-resource reporting for Arturia, ROLI, Initial Audio, Guitar Rig impulse responses, Apple Core Audio/Space Designer, Scala tuning, and wavetable files.
  • Send To now appends plain file and folder inputs to an already running FileDentify window instead of replacing the current report. Use File > New report or Ctrl+N when you explicitly want to start over.
  • Improved high-value section ordering so FileDentify-specific sections are easier to discover before generic evidence.
  • Added build-time sanity checks for section ordering and HTML-view shortcut parity.

The portable ZIP contains FileDentify.exe, fd.com, and LICENSE.txt. fd.com must stay beside FileDentify.exe for terminal mode.

@OnjLouis OnjLouis released this 30 Jun 10:42

FileDentify 1.4

This release expands FileDentify's file coverage and tightens the report experience.

Highlights:

  • Fixed last-report recovery so closing with Escape preserves the selected file, section, and report item.
  • Fixed locked or unreadable files so they appear as inspection-error entries instead of stopping a GUI report.
  • Added cautious identification for protected .bpak game packages.
  • Added more classic game detail for Quake-family files and Duke Nukem 3D save context.
  • Added Quick Windows Sequencer support-file reporting.
  • Added NVDA add-on package reporting.
  • Expanded firmware, hardware-ID, VMware, Electron ASAR, NuGet, AI model, speech-engine, personal/export, and Windows/system file reporting.
  • Refined the embedded HTML details view and readable-text output, including better heading behavior and less duplicate/noisy string output.

See the built-in manual's Supported file types table for the maintained coverage list.

FileDentify 1.3

Choose a tag to compare

@OnjLouis OnjLouis released this 29 Jun 18:17

FileDentify 1.3 turns the app into a deeper file-inspection, report, and viewer tool.

Highlights:

  • Added native .fdreport reports that reopen inside FileDentify, including report overview, files, sections, and selection state.
  • Added folder scanning, append-to-report, refresh, recent/last-report recovery, and report association support.
  • Added richer keyboard navigation across files and sections, including Alt+Left/Right, Alt+Up/Down, Alt+PageUp/PageDown, Alt+Home/End, Ctrl+number section jumps, and Tolk-powered screen-reader shortcut hints.
  • Improved the advanced viewer with owned/maximized window behavior, status-bar announcements, remembered position, non-wrapping search, load-more behavior, and readable/hex/binary/octal modes.
  • Added or expanded many format families, including REAPER projects, Piper/Sonata voices, legacy JLW/VOP sound banks, Apple/Mac bundles and backups, Logic/GarageBand projects, sparse bundles, Nintendo Switch content folders, Symbian/Java MIDlet files, router/NAS/mail/audio backups, mobile tones, game ROMs/assets/audio, pro-audio libraries and plug-ins, sample instruments, archives, disk images, firmware, documents, media metadata, AI/Ollama files, Clipman reports, and FileDentify reports.
  • Added embedded Tolk and NVDA controller support for polite shortcut announcements.
  • Updated release privacy checks and package rules. Portable ZIPs now ship only the app, terminal companion, and license; the built-in manual is the user documentation source of truth.
  • Fixed several false-positive cases, including REAPER backups and UJAM-style blobs being misreported as unrelated music software content.

Thanks to everyone who reported issues and sent files to test. We tested this release across a large mixed set of files, folders, reports, terminal workflows, and screen-reader workflows.

FileDentify 1.2

Choose a tag to compare

@OnjLouis OnjLouis released this 28 Jun 18:51

FileDentify 1.2 adds broader metadata reporting and accessibility polish.

Highlights:

  • Added Windows property metadata for formats supported by Explorer property handlers.
  • Added Office Open XML metadata for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files, including document kind, core/app properties, counts, media/embedded counts, and custom properties.
  • Added OpenDocument metadata for .odt, .ods, .odp, and related formats.
  • Improved likely-type summaries for ZIP-based document formats.
  • Added short command-line switches for every option, including --advanced-view / -av.
  • Improved the advanced viewer status bar so NVDA's status command reads it, with current line information first.
  • Improved --close / -c so owned advanced-viewer windows close gracefully too.
  • Filtered noisy Explorer storage fields from Windows property metadata.

Release hygiene note:

  • The release asset was refreshed shortly after publication to remove maintainer-only README content. No app behavior changed.

Closes #3.

FileDentify 1.1.1

Choose a tag to compare

@OnjLouis OnjLouis released this 28 Jun 16:36

FileDentify 1.1.1 is a focused advanced file viewer fix release.

Fixed

  • Fixed a crash in the F4 Advanced file viewer when pressing Enter after searching from a selection at the end of the loaded output.
  • Improved advanced viewer scrolling so extra data is loaded only when the review cursor is actually at the loaded end, avoiding confusing line jumps near the end of a loaded block.

Improved

  • Added Ctrl+F in the Advanced file viewer to focus the search field and select the previous search text so typing replaces it.
  • Added Shift+F3 in the Advanced file viewer to search backward through loaded output.
  • The Advanced file viewer status line now updates the current line number while moving through loaded output.

Validation

We tested the rebuilt app with text report output, HTML report output, advanced viewer command-line output, and a targeted WinForms harness for the original search-at-end crash path.
