Focusing on the 10-week versus 16-week length of a course does not address the main structural difference. Assuming a typical load of 4–5 courses per quarter, students complete 12–15 courses per year, or roughly 48–60 courses over a four-year CS program. These courses are usually a mix of technical and non-technical subjects. In a semester system, students taking 4–5 courses per term complete 8–10 courses per year, or about 32–40 courses over four years. This leads to a meaningful difference: approximately 54 courses on average in a quarter system versus 36 in a semester system. The result is not necessarily greater depth in computer science. Instead, it increases surface-level breadth and exposure, without guaranteeing deeper understanding or long-term retention. However, the larger number of course slots makes it easier to incorporate a wider range of subjects—such as art, design, literature, philosophy, languages, or biology—alongside a CS curriculum. Structurally, the quarter system favors breadth and exploration, while the semester system favors depth and sustained engagement within a smaller set of subjects. |
