🎉 Outline Client and Manager 1.22.0 Released

We're excited to announce the 1.22.0 release of the Outline Client and Outline Manager. This release mostly contains stability and reliability fixes, and a batch of crash fixes across platforms.

Highlights:

• Simpler in-app feedback (#2821, #2822) — the multi-step "Contact us" wizard is replaced by a single Feedback form: pick a category, optionally add your email, write your message. Email is now optional.
• Linux: fix for an unusable first-run screen (#2832) — on some systems (reported on Ubuntu 26.04, #2794) GPU rendering froze the UI so the buttons on the privacy screen never appeared. GPU acceleration is now disabled on Linux so the app always paints.
• Manager: add a server without waiting (#2848) — adding a manual server no longer blocks on a 30-second pre-check. The server is added immediately and shows a "Connecting to your server…" state while its health check runs, with Retry and Remove if it can't be reached. This also fixes two bugs where cancelling or editing mid-check could open the wrong dialog or leave a half-added server behind.
• Android: ready for Android 16 (#2828, #2820) — targets API 36 on cordova-android 15, with native libraries aligned for 16 KB memory pages. Android users on 1.21.4/1.21.5 already have these; this release brings the rest of the platforms up to the same codebase.
• Crash fixes — desktop apps no longer error while quitting (#2849, #2862); the "add access key" dialog no longer hangs in an infinite loop (#2882); Android's VPN service is more robust on auto-start and connectivity changes (#2886, #2856).
• Under the hood — the desktop renderer now runs in Electron's sandbox (#2830), and native crash reports now carry debug symbols (#2825), so the crashes we do see are much easier to diagnose and fix.

1.22.0 on iOS and macOS: phased release paused

We have paused the phased release of Outline Client 1.22.0 on iOS and macOS. If you already have 1.22.0 and it works for you, nothing changes. Android, Windows, Linux and the Manager are not affected.

Issue

1.22.0 shows a blank white screen on iOS/iPadOS 15 and on macOS Monterey (12):

• Outline displays a blank white screen on iPad Air 2 after update #2899 (iPad Air 2, iPadOS 15.8.8)
• Outline Client 1.22.0: blank white window on macOS Monterey due to RegExp lookbehind #2900 (macOS Monterey 12.7.6)

Thanks to @Safamahjoob and @amstel8 for the reports, and to @amstel8 for finding the cause.

Root cause

The cause is in the Sentry SDK we upgraded in 1.22.0 for crash reporting and the new Feedback form. That version includes a regular expression with a lookbehind assertion, which WebKit only supports from version 16.4. On older iOS and macOS the system WebKit refuses to parse the app's JavaScript, so nothing renders. The code in question is a server-side part of the SDK that the app never runs, but it is still in the bundle and still has to parse. Sentry fixed this upstream in getsentry/sentry-javascript#20498 (issue #20433).

Next steps

Apple does not allow rolling back a release, so the fix will ship as a new version. We are preparing a 1.22.3 release for iOS and macOS with the updated Sentry SDK (#2902), and likely a Capacitor fix similar to #2898. If you are on iOS 15 or macOS 12 and see the white screen, updating to 1.22.3 as soon as it is available will fix it. It will roll out over the next few days.

Outline Client 1.22.3 for iOS and macOS

1.22.3 is a fix release for iOS and macOS only. It replaces 1.22.0 on those two platforms; Android, Windows and Linux stay on 1.22.0.

Fixes the blank white screen on iOS 15 / iPadOS 15 and macOS Monterey (#2899, #2900). 1.22.0 upgraded the Sentry error-reporting SDK, and that SDK version contained a regular expression that WebKit before 16.4 cannot parse, so the app's JavaScript failed to load and nothing was drawn. 1.22.3 moves to a Sentry SDK release with the upstream fix. Thanks again to @Safamahjoob and @amstel8 for the reports. If you are on iOS 15 or macOS 12 and the app opens to an empty window, updating to 1.22.3 fixes it.

The app is also smaller: images are losslessly compressed and source maps are no longer bundled.
