Preflight Checklist
What type of Apple device is the feature request for?
iPhone, iPad
Describe the feature
Add an optional AI colorizer that transforms black-and-white manga into color on-the-fly. Users could read normally and toggle colorization per manga or globally, with colors applied instantly while preserving original ink lines and using canon-accurate anime color schemes where possible. Colorized chapters would be savable for offline reading.
Feature Motivation
This feature would greatly enhance the reading experience for users who prefer a more cinematic and vibrant presentation, making Paperback more competitive with other modern reading platforms. It would also help users who struggle with monochrome art styles or simply want to experience their favorite manga in a new way. The option for free on‑device colorization would set Paperback apart from apps that require subscriptions for basic AI features.
Anything Else?
Additional context (Technical)
- Two processing modes :
- On‑device processing : A lightweight Core ML model for real‑time colorization.
- Cloud processing : Optional server‑side model for higher quality (could be offered as a paid tier due to server costs).
- Performance : Target minimal lag, complex panel handling, and no degradation of original line art.
- User control : provide a toggle to enable/disable colorization per manga or globally, and allow switching between on‑device and cloud processing.
While this is a non‑trivial feature, Paperback’s modular architecture might allow it to be implemented as an extension or add‑on module. I am open to discussing technical feasibility and willing to help implement/test if the feature gets approved.
