"Show popup only on key" doesn't work in text input fields

I'm trying to use this extension on a Google Docs page, and I noticed that when I enable "Show popup on key" it doesn't work in the Google doc. It does, however, work on regular pages like Wikipedia. If I disable "Show popup on key" then it works in both contexts.

I also just realized it doesn't work in this GitHub issue creation text field, even though it does work on the Preview tab. So, I guess it doesn't work in any text input fields?

Yomichan, a similar plugin but for Japanese, works just fine with a hotkey in text fields.

On further investigation, I've found that it doesn't work when a cursor is active in an input field. When the cursor is not active in an input field (such as by clicking outside the field), I can mouse over and hold Ctrl over the text in the input field to view the popup.
