BIP-110 Hashrate Rentals: How Plebs Are Signaling for Bitcoin Protocol Spam Filters

Emerging trend: March–April 2026

BIP-110 is a temporary one-year soft fork proposal that tightens consensus rules to limit arbitrary non-monetary data — inscriptions, BRC-20 tokens, large OP_RETURNs — on Bitcoin's blockchain. The goal is to refocus it as sound money and reduce spam/node costs.

Ocean mining pool produced the first BIP-110 signaling block in early March 2026. Supporters now see hashrate rentals as a cheap, accessible way to boost signaling — and eventually help activation via miner/node consensus or UASF.

On the rise: Ocean hashrate has been climbing over the last 30 days — from ~13.5 to ~14.5 EH/s — per their dashboard (https://ocean.xyz/dashboard).

1. Rent hashrate on Braiins Hashpower

• Pay in sats for PH/s over hours/days
• Typical cost: ~47k sats per PH/s per day

2. Point your rented hash at a Datum-compatible stratum

Scaled from 100 TH/s (home gear) to 1.1 PH/s by renting from Braiins and routing through his own Datum to Ocean.

"The difference between what I am paying for the hashrate and what I am getting from @ocean_mining is less than half the cost of a cup of coffee per day."

Started small (1 PH/s) to handle variance. Sees it as protocol "dues" to secure his stack. Offered to help plebs set up — took him ~2 hours.

First-time rental of 15 PH/s for 7 hours from Braiins, pointed at PyBlock's Datum.

"To signal BIP-110... that's equivalent to 20+ days running an ASIC S21+... I should break even or very close."

Plans to spread future rentals out to reduce variance and eventually run his own Datum. PyBlock confirmed it uses BIP-110 templates to Ocean (with fee discounts).

Criticism

Critics call it "virtue signaling" that mostly benefits pool operators or risks net losses due to variance and Braiins reinvesting the sats.

"To summarize though: I've been running these nodes long before the spam war started. I switched to knots last year because I believe that's the right choice, 100k op_return dramatically increases the attack surface of bitcoin and must be stopped. I then upgraded to knots 29.3+bip110 about 2 weeks ago now, and that's when everyone noticed all the nodes.
These nodes may be viewed as "fake" but they were still handling 80k connections from 35k unique sources. I actually did control 3k nodes, and I chose to signal bip110."

Brings into question the Sybil resistance of the network:

"The vulnerability is that I was able to do this for a much lower cost than assumed would be required. IP addresses are easy to rent/lease for $0.30-0.40, ASNs are easy to obtain and advertise from, and the bitcoin blockchain is easily deduplicated at both the block and file levels.
Only a small fraction of nodes are IPv4 reachable (meaning, accept inbound connections via IPv4), and nodes by default only make 8-12 outbound connections. With a little bit more scale, a single person or entity could become a large majority of the IPv4 reachable nodes that other nodes connect to, and that would allow them to control/restrict/decide/manipulate all traffic flow between nodes.
One action that would help change this is if more people made their bitcoin nodes IPv4 reachable -- able to accept inbound connections on TCP/8333 from the public internet
Another action would be to increase the outbound connection count to 24-48.
There are other combined actions/changes that help solve this but these two are ones that individual node runners can do."

Bisq v1 has experienced an exploit in its trade protocol that allowed an attacker to drain a portion of available offers.

Was it an AI-assisted attack?

We cannot say with certainty, but based on our experience during the investigation we think it is likely. After the issue was discovered, one group of developers began manual code inspection to understand how the exploit could have happened.
