Briefly, quantum computing is a type of computing that uses quantum-mechanical effects, such as superposition and entanglement, to process information in ways that are different from classical computing. For certain classes of problems — probably a fairly narrow set, as far as we currently know — this can lead to much better scaling than any known classical approach.

As for applications, there is plenty of information available online, but from our perspective, especially in fault-tolerant quantum computing, some of the most promising applications over the next 10 years are likely to be:

• Simulation of physical systems, such as quantum chemistry and solid-state physics
• Cryptography
• Possibly solving some classes of differential equations
