To those that require xkcd to fully wake up in the morning, all that is required is to link it as a startup program in Ubuntu, and enjoy xkcd from your desktop!
In terminal:
hash convert 2>/dev/null || sudo apt-get install imagemagick
gnome-session-properties
In popup:
Add->(browse to and select xkcdestop.sh)
(type in name and description)
Logout, and log back in.
