Currently the check if MPI is GPU aware is true for OpenMPI which restricts the use of GPU direct communication for other MPI libraries on HPC systems such as Cray MPICH.
Very raw prototype to fix this in PR draft #724 done in a bit of a rush.
I will update the PR once solution has matured and is tested.
