Error on csplit

Came across this and it looked useful but I am getting an error when I try run the script:

csplit: *}: bad repetition count
Error splitting README.md
~~~

No editing to the core code other than the varibles I'd be customising. Tried doing some digging but couldn't find anything overly obvious from my limited knowledge.
