Starting as a service

NEW: Fan Control can now be started on boot as a service, without any user session.

Does this mean we can start Fan Control purely as a service and untick "start app at user logon" and it's still actively controlling the fans?

Yes it will run in the background on boot. No UI. It will run the latest config you got loaded.

Nop, service itself can't interact with user session.

You can still have the app opened on user logon, service will fill the gaps when you are logged off.

Is that so? Because when "Start service on boot" is enabled, the tray icon for Fan Control is displayed. But clicking on it gives the option to actually launch the app and the service will stop.

If you start the app (FanControl.exe) with the "minimized" option on while the service is running, it won't shutdown the service, it will start a minimized process and allow to control the service from the tray icon. Sort of a mini UI only client to monitor the service.

If you don't have the minimized option, then it shutdowns the service, and opens the normal app, which runs the fans as it always did before.

So there's like 4 possible states:

1: Service is running, no auto-start on user logon -> no ui, no tray icon.
2: Service is running, auto-start on user logon + minimized option ON -> mini-client in the tray to control the service.
3: Service is running, auto-start on user logon + minimized option OFF -> closes the service and opens the full app as before in the user session.
4: Service off, auto-start on user logon -> as all versions prior, the ui process also has the fan control engine running.

The important takeaway is: In any case, your fancontrol config is being ran. This just adds the option to have a multi-session setup, or simply have it run while no user is logged on.
