Disabling EmulationStation's automatic boot gives a black screen #191

As I have posted before on the PetRockBlog forums (http://blog.petrockblock.com/forums/topic/disable-autostarting-emulationstation/), I am running into the following problem when trying to disable EmulationStation's automatic boot (selecting "Original Boot behaviour" in the retropie-setup.sh):

When I select this option in the setup and reboot, I am greeted with the "The RetroPie Project" Splash screen, followed by a black screen.

I am able to start the second shell with Ctrl/Alt/F2 and can enable ES at boot again, allowing me to use the Pi normally, but I still have to kill ES with F4 if I want to use something different.

Testing this with a fresh install of the SD card image provided the same results.
