Emergency rollback release: restore the v0.2.3 Swift/AppKit implementation after the v0.3.0 Rust/GPUI rewrite failed the native macOS parity gate.

Fixed

  • Restored the borderless floating NSPanel, accessory activation policy, and menu-bar item/menu. Photon stays out of the Dock and the launcher has no title bar or traffic lights.
  • Restored live system light/dark appearance, top-edge-anchored panel resizing, Finder application bundle icons, and the global Cmd+Shift+V clipboard workflow.
  • Restored the complete v0.2.3 feature set: app and System Settings search, calculator, home file search and mixed results, empty-Down recommendations, notes, settings, configurable hotkeys, drag/snap, keybinds, and footer actions.
  • Added a packaged-app runtime harness on macos-latest. It drives global hotkeys, clicks, typing, arrow navigation, live appearance changes, and clipboard reopen; it inspects NSRunningApplication, CGWindow, panel style/frame, menu status, and icon resolution.
  • Added light/dark screenshot validation that rejects traffic-light-like title chrome and oversized compact launcher captures.

Changed

  • The Rust/GPUI rewrite remains recorded in v0.3.0 history but is not the shipping implementation. Swift 6 + SwiftUI/AppKit is the release stack again.

Signing

This build is ad-hoc signed and not notarized: the Apple signing secrets were not configured when it was built. macOS Gatekeeper will block the first launch of a downloaded copy.

  • macOS 14: Control-click Photon.app and choose Open, then confirm.
  • macOS 15 and later: try to open the app once, then open System Settings > Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway.
  • Or remove the quarantine flag: xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Photon.app

brew tap ryanstoffel/taps
brew install --cask ryanstoffel/taps/photon

On Homebrew 7 or later, run brew trust ryanstoffel/taps once so that brew upgrade can load the cask.

Or download Photon-0.3.1.zip (or the .dmg) below and move Photon.app to /Applications. Verify a download with shasum -a 256 -c SHA256SUMS after placing the file next to it.

Photon needs macOS 14 or later. It asks for Accessibility access on first launch for paste-back, the Hyper key, and window management; everything else works without it.
