Depth engine issue

Is there any way for one to refine the depth engine so that way my widgets can get behind people? I swear to god, I had a character that is literally front and center in the wallpaper but for some ungodly reason it only choose her head or her sleeves.
Am I doing something wrong? Even the finetune settings for the depth engine is gone now, I'll have to hope to god it works.
Please help. (And I did try with the Fine model but it didn't do anything better, still did as worse as the Standard model.)
