Quick Update:

1. I just noticed geopandas is already a dependency so my question about adding geopandas as dependency is obsolete.
2. I'm working on a solution where I load the geojson vector first then check which segments of the vector are within the bounding box. I will post further updates to this document as I experiment more.

Update on point 2 in my previous post.

So I did some testing and determined the most efficient approach to be:

1. Having the user select a bounding box
2. Performing a geospatial join between the bounding box and the coastline vector to get the parts of the coastline vector within the bounding box
3. Displaying only the portions of the coastline vector within the bounding box.

The Alternative Approach

The alternative approach was to load the coastline vector first then have the user select a portion of the vector by drawing a bounding box.

Why the Alternative Approach Fails

I tried loading in the coastline vector first, but due to its size, it made the program very slow and made map iterations painful. I also had to remove the coastline vector from the map before adding only the portion of the coastline vector within the bounding box to the map, which is a wasteful operation.

The Recommend Appraoch

I recommend going with the first approach where the user selects a region of the coast to analyze with the bounding box then the coastline vector is only loaded within that bounding box because it is simpler and more computationally effiecent.
