The last letter. The open platform.
No niche. No gatekeeping.
Z is a social platform built for the free exchange of ideas across every discipline and community. It is not a platform for scientists, artists, or any single group — it is a platform for everyone, open without prerequisite, credential, or cultural tax.
The name "Z" carries symbolic weight: it is the final letter of the alphabet — the place where everything converges. It implies completion and universality. Short, pronounceable in almost every language, and free of corporate or cultural baggage.
Existing social platforms have failed users by design: algorithmic feeds optimized for engagement reward outrage, confirmation bias, and tribal signaling. People leave these platforms less informed, more anxious, and more entrenched in their views.
Z starts from a different assumption: people are capable of encountering ideas they disagree with, and that serendipitous collisions between different worldviews are more valuable than comfortable reinforcement.
Everyone.
Not as a marketing platitude — as a structural commitment.
From the scientist and the farmer, to the teenager and the philosopher, the coder and the ceramicist — Z has no primary demographic. Its primary value is simple: ideas matter more than identity.
-
Chronological First
Default feed is strictly time-ordered. Recency beats virality. Users can opt into ranked feeds, but the starting position is chronological. -
Ideas Ranked, Not People
Follower counts are hidden by default. Visibility is driven by engagement quality (reply depth, read time, share-with-note rate), not vanity metrics. -
Cross-Field Bridges
The algorithm deliberately surfaces thoughtful posts from fields outside your normal graph, matched by theme rather than tribe. -
Open Moderation
Community notes on every post. Moderation decisions are public, reasoned, and appealable. No shadow-banning. -
No Advertising, Ever
The platform is funded by voluntary subscriptions and tipping. Your feed belongs to you, not to advertisers. -
Portable Identity
Full data export at any time. Built on open standards (ActivityPub-compatible) so you can take your account and content anywhere.
Every feed session is intentionally composed of four slot types:
- 40% Following & topics (chronological)
- 25% Cross-field bridges (thematic matches outside your graph)
- 25% Depth-ranked posts (high reply-to-read ratio)
- 10% Pure random (a post from completely outside your graph)
Additional structural safeguards include:
- Dissent shown inline by default
- Outrage friction on share actions
- Mandatory quote context (minimum 30 characters)
- Transparent, explainable algorithm
- Text post — up to 500 characters
- Long post — up to 10,000 characters
- Image post — high-fidelity with required alt text
- Bridge post — explicitly tags multiple fields for cross-disciplinary discovery
- Embedded data — charts, tables, LaTeX/MathML support
- Collection — curated sets of posts with commentary
Z requires no credentials to post. Optional verification tiers exist for those who want them:
- Basic (email-verified)
- Field tag (self-declared)
- Institutional link (verified)
- Peer vouching (public, field-specific)
None of these tiers affect algorithmic reach.
- Supporter Subscription ($3–5/month) — unlocks longer posts, higher quality uploads, algorithm transparency, and export tools. No reach advantage.
- Creator Tipping — 95% goes to the creator (platform takes 5%)
- Institutional Access — for universities, libraries, and research organisations
- ActivityPub federation support
- Full data portability (JSON, ActivityPub JSON-LD)
- Open public API
- Native LaTeX/MathML rendering
- Edge CDN for high-fidelity media
- Will never sell advertising
- Will never optimise for time-on-platform
- Will never shadow-ban
- Will never sell reach
- Will never require a phone number
- Will never hold your data hostage
Z is the platform where a fungal biologist, a Swahili poet, and a plumber can all say something true — and any of them might be the most interesting person you encounter today.
