#2344 is all very well, but making cube data in newstyle lazy arrays breaks many many tests.
Add workarounds + skips until we have some reasonable test coverage with all (remaining) tests passing.
Accept:
- most useful things are still tested (judgement please !)
- all (remaining) tests passing
