Suggestion for Unturned 3: Support for Extra Bones & Custom Rigging for Apparel/Cosmetics
#5556
First of all, huge thanks for the continuous updates and dedicated support for Unturned.
I’d like to suggest an improvement specifically for Unturned 3’s modding pipeline: support for extra bones and skeleton extensions on player apparel.
The current limitation:
Right now, custom clothing and armor are strictly tied to the default humanoid bones (Skeleton.asset / base player rig). While we can attach static objects via hooks, modders cannot create fully rigged clothing with extra animated limbs or accessories (e.g., characters with 4 arms, animated tails, wings, mechanical limbs, or alien anatomy).
How it could work in U3:
Allow apparel meshes (SkinnedMeshRenderer) to include extra child bones that mount to existing player bones (like an extra pair of arms attached to the Spine/Chest).
Provide a way for modders to include custom animation clips for these extra bones directly within the item’s Unity AssetBundle.
The game would still use the base player animations for vanilla movement, while the item's own rig/animator handles the custom secondary limbs.
This level of customization would be a massive leap for modded servers, roleplay communities, and total conversion mods in Unturned 3 without requiring a full engine rewrite.
Would it be technically feasible to support extra rigged bones on clothing items in an upcoming U3 update?
