Describe the bug
Lmod fails to build with lua 5.5:

checking for valid Lua versionError: Lmod requires versions 5.1, 5.2, 5.3, or 5.4 You have: 5.5

Fedora rawhide has updated to 5.5 so you can try building Lmod there.

Thanks for reporting this. We’ve updated Lmod’s configure script to accept Lua 5.5 (merged in #933), so the previous “Lmod requires versions 5.1, 5.2, 5.3, or 5.4” error should no longer appear.

However, Lmod does not yet fully support Lua 5.5 until its required Lua packages add 5.5 support. In particular:
• luaposix (required) - not yet compatible with Lua 5.5
• lua-term - not yet compatible with Lua 5.5
• luafilesystem, luajson - compatibility not yet confirmed

On Fedora rawhide with Lua 5.5, ./configure will pass the Lua version check but will fail when checking for the posix module. Once luaposix and the other dependencies support Lua 5.5, Lmod should work with it.

We’ve excluded Lua 5.5 from CI for now and will re-enable it when the ecosystem supports it.

Seems to be a race-condition on our side, the libraries are still being built after the 5.5 update, will try it locally and update if the build works or not

Lmod overwrites the env var BASH_ENV to make the module command available in
bash scripts. If your site does not set BASH_ENV then you can ignore the
comments below.
If your site already uses BASH_ENV to point to a site specific script, please
consider sourcing Lmod's init/bash from your site's file.

Lmod is exporting the module command for Bash users. Some sites may have some
problems. First:
   0.  Make sure that all your machines have shellshock bash patch.
If that does not fix things then you have two choices:
   1.  You configure Lmod not to export the module command.
   2.  You can filter out the exported functions in the users environment
       during job submission
If there is a way to do step 2, please try to do so. Otherwise do step 1.
The advantage of exporting the module command is that it is defined in
/bin/sh scripts. Because Lmod defines BASH_ENV to point to init/bash,
it will be defined for /bin/bash scripts.  The trouble is that users
have to remember to put #!/bin/bash at the first line of their shell
script to make that work. We used to see tickets where users would
submit jobs as /bin/sh scripts and wonder why the module command did
not work.

I've reported an issue about the Lua 5.5 compatibility of the dependency Luaposix: luaposix/luaposix#394. Luaposix is a neccessary dependency of Lmod, so it wouldn't work unless luaposix is updated for Lua 5.5.

Since Lua Posix currently doesn't support Lua 5.5. I am turning off support Lua 5.5. This update is released in Lmod 9.1.3

I am not sure if luaposix supports it or not, and similarly for all the dependencies in the chain. The issue encountered was due to the read-only for loop. After fixing it and picking up the package rebuilds for 5.5 it did go passed it.

I expect most failures to come from the read-only for loop change, so I propose to write a simple script to go through all of the lua scripts and patch the usage as shown in #807 (comment). This would be backwards compatible so it would be safe to ship that instead.

The tricky part are the dependencies, but that is outside of your control, so I wouldn't suggest to block it based on this. We will try to follow up with the dependents instead and probably propose a similar fix

I am unable to get luaposix to build with Lua 5.5. Here is an apptainer def file: test.def:

test.txt

(Rename test.txt to test.def)
Then run:
$ apptainer build test.def

It fails when trying to luarocks install luabitop

In order for Lmod to support Lua 5.5 I have to be able to test it. If there is a way to modify test.def to get this to work, please let me know.

That I would not have enough experience with. On the Fedora side, we didn't seem to have made any changes to the build step https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/lua-posix/blob/rawhide/f/lua-posix.spec and it built and tests fine. What we can offer you is a container that you can build and navigate in, would that be helpful?

When I tried to build locally lua-posix alone was not sufficient (but probably the issues came from the for loop read-only) so I've added the known dependencies + luarocks.
