K-UI 1.0.1 — GD Ripper stability update

K-UI — Katana User Interface

K-UI 1.0.1 addresses the repeated buffer corruption observed during GD-ROM
ripping and improves GD Ripper's completion handling. It includes GD Ripper
2.2.5
and the existing Bootloader 3.3.

What changed

  • Display cache handling: screen uploads now write back only the framebuffer's
cache lines. This avoids the previous whole-cache shortcut that also touched
    unrelated memory while ripping.
  • Cleaner completion: GD Ripper avoids issuing a second drive-stop command
after the pre-verification stop has succeeded. Cleanup still retries a failed
stop and runs on cancellation or earlier errors.
  • Useful failure logs: rip.log records the verification result, result-display
and final cleanup stages, and bounded before/after bytes for sampled buffer
corruption. Existing retries, checkpoints and dump formats are retained.

Console results

Two fresh E.G.G. rips used the same settings with music loaded:

Result Previous build Updated build
Recovered sector-validation failures 69 0
TOSEC track CRC matches All 3 All 3
Rip and final cleanup Completed Completed

The updated run completed all 516,324 sectors without a bulk-read error. Its
full TOSEC match covers the streamed track CRCs; it was not a full SD read-back.
The same source also passed the complete Dreamcast build.

This is encouraging evidence for the cache correction. One successful fresh
rip cannot prove the previously intermittent reboot is permanently eliminated.

If it recurs, keep rip.log, verify.log, the build identity and any exception
photo. See the investigation and hardware results.

Install or update

  1. Power down and back up your current DS folder and personal settings.
  2. Extract K-UI-v1.0.1.zip and copy its entire DS folder to the root of
your SD or IDE/CF device, replacing matching program files.
  3. Update DS/DS_CORE.BIN as well as the apps. The display-cache correction
is in the core; an app-only update does not install it.
  4. Safely eject and boot the updated core from storage. GD Ripper shows 2.2.5.
Keep existing dumps and their CRC/recovery sidecars together.

Your already-working bootloader disc can load this update. No new bootloader
CD is required
for an existing working SD/IDE installation. For a full CD
installation, use K-UI-v1.0.1.cdi. No BIOS flashing or dump conversion is needed.

All K-UI 1.0 apps, artwork, music and existing game/device support remain in the
complete package. Existing compatibility limits, including Bust-A-Move 4 on
serial SD, are documented in the compatibility record.

K-UI 1.0 — Katana User Interface

K-UI 1.0 brings disc dumping, game browsing, file management and VMU tools together in a refreshed interface for the Dreamcast.

Katana User Interface began with improvements to GD-ROM dumping and grew into an overhaul of the everyday tools surrounding it. This release brings those changes together with a consistent cyan-and-magenta theme, clearer controller navigation and an original synth soundtrack.

What’s included

  • GD Ripper: Stop/Resume, saved checkpoints, CRC verification, TOSEC and Redump-derived catalog comparisons, and targeted recovery of problem sectors. Recovery totals now retain the distinction between recovered and unresolved sectors across sessions.
  • Launcher and Games: app descriptions, coordinated icons, game artwork and eligible CD-audio previews. The new launcher replaces the retired Classic menu.
  • ISO Loader: improved controller navigation, immediate folder refresh, image checks and launch reports.
  • File Manager and VMU Manager: two-pane file management, individual and bulk save copying, and full-card VMU backup/restore. File Manager startup and shared pointer-control fixes are included.
  • Storage support: FAT16, FAT32 and exFAT across the core, bootloader and ISO Loader.
  • Bootloader 3.3: corrected early startup, a clearer recovery screen and SD insertion/rescan support.
  • Five original synth loops: optional music in the launcher and ripper, with a track selected on entry. Ripper music is unloaded during CRC verification and restored afterward.

Settings, GD Play, Network, Speedtest, Memtest and the other bundled utilities round out the package.

Install or update

  1. Download the attached K-UI-v1.0.zip.
  2. Back up your existing DS folder and personal files, including settings, presets, covers and custom music.
  3. Copy the complete DS folder from the ZIP to the root of your supported SD or IDE/CF device, replacing matching program files.
  4. Preserve or restore your personal files, safely eject the device and boot.

Your existing dumps and recovery files remain usable.

An already-working, compatible boot disc can be reused. The included K-UI_bootloader_v3.3.cdi provides the updated bootloader; older loaders without exFAT support need updating before they can boot an exFAT device. No BIOS flashing is required.

The ZIP also includes a full CD image, installation instructions, app guides and PC verification tools.

Known issues and compatibility

An intermittent crash while dumping MDK2 remains under investigation. Subsequent resume/CRC checks succeeded, but the original failure has not been reproduced reliably.

Bust-A-Move 4 also has a documented black-screen issue through ISO Loader on serial SD. Compatibility depends on the game, storage device and settings; see the [compatibility notes](https://github.com/TPMJB/K-UI_DS/blob/54b1c9c78f17abfb494c08c79f0f91412f9bbc41/docs/compatibility.md).

For a useful bug report, include your hardware, filesystem, game/disc revision and available logs. For crashes, a photo of the complete exception screen is especially helpful.
