Sometimes we get help cooking from someone who's primary language is different than my own

It would be nice to have an in-app language switcher, which called out to an API like Google Translate or DeepL

Just use the OS built-in translation. E.g. https://support.apple.com/guide/iphone/translate-text-in-apps-iphab4dcff1d/ios

I do plan on adding a "translate this recipe" feature but that was aiming more at actually changing the language permanently. What you mean is a temporary/view translation if I understand correctly. That I think is best achieved by just using the browsers translation system.

Maybe there is some way to "promt" the browser to show the translation dialog

For me, the use case would be both translating recipes and permanently switching language for specific users. My instance is used by people with different native languages and in order to exchange recipes, we need to either manually translate on-the-fly (which is annoying) or create duplicates in different languages (which prevents tweaking recipes).

so while I do understand your need and a few people have asked for that I do think a full on translation system is outside the scope of this application as it would add a layer of complexity that I am not willing to manage and that will have detrimental effects on performance that would apply to everyone even if not using this feature.

What I've ended up doing with the recipe app I chose is creating a separate Android tablet user for the second language. Then I've changed the language in the browser on that profile so that Google auto-translates the web app
