MortalityMinder is an open-source project that can be easily extended. As user provide feedback, new features and capabilities can be added. Users can submit suggested improvements as Github issues. Here are some ideas for potential improvements.

  • Future mortality rates from CDC Wonder and factors from CHR and can easily incorporated using the provided loaders.

  • Different versions of the mortality rates could be obtained from CDC Wonder. Additional causes of death could be included. To provide a different perspective, age-adjusted mortality rates could be obtained. An option to age adjust or not could be added.

  • Additional social determinants could be added. It would be valuable to obtain Social and Economic Factors from through out the tine course. The ones included now are from 2019 CHR were used because they were the best match for data in the final 2015-2017 period.

  • Different types of analysis can be added. For example, alternative test for correlation or causal analysis methods could be employed.

  • New views that address different analysis questions could be added. For example, views could be added that permitted state by state comparison. Right now state-by-state comparison can be done by comparing the

  • A mobile app could be developed customized for use on smart phones and tablets.

  • MortalityMinder is in the process of being put in full compliance with the ADA accessibility criteria.

  • The MortalityMinder framework can easily adapted to determine the social and economic determinants of other health outcomes by simply gathering county-level data on the outcome of interests.
