The
diagnostics/server component blurted out lots of updates but didn't provide progress statements, and was effectively producing asynchronous updates. This PR fixes that by channeling progress information along as well, to allow synchronous updates at the other end, if the consumer values them, for example to always present consistent state, and to know just how up-to-date the data are.
