Printing and Scanning

The color is carried by single printer dots, 1/600 inch apart. Everything below is about keeping those dots where they belong.

Printing

Setting Use Why
Scale Actual size (100 %) Any other scale resamples the dots; the color usually won't decode. Inkhue's print panel warns you.
Printer resolution 600 dpi (the printer's native resolution) The page is made of 600 dpi dots.
Printer type Laser if you can Toner dots are sharp. Inkjet works but ink spreads, especially on absorbent paper.
Paper Plain office paper Photo paper makes inkjet ink spread more.
Color mode Black and white The page is pure black and white anyway.
Photo enhancement, "toner save" Off They change the dots.

Fill the paper (on by default in the app) prints each photo as large as fits on the paper at 100 %. Bigger prints carry more redundancy and come back at a higher resolution: at 600 dpi every inch holds 150 cells, and the color is recovered at 2 pixels per cell.

The print panel

Option What it does
Destination Any installed printer, or Save as PDF (lossless, 1-bit)
Copies, Layout, Color As usual. Layout Auto turns the sheet to fit the photo.
Paper size The printer's own list
Pages per sheet 1, 2 or 4 copies of the page on one sheet, always at 100 %
Margins Default, minimum or none
Scale Actual size (recommended), fit to page, custom
Two-sided When the printer supports it
Headers and footers Title, date and a scanning hint in the margins
Printer options Everything else the driver offers: quality, paper type, tray… Choose the highest quality and plain paper.

Scanning

Setting Use
Resolution 600 dpi (at least 400)
Mode Grayscale (color works too, it's just bigger)
Sharpening, descreen / moiré removal, "text enhancement" Off
Format PNG or TIFF; high-quality JPEG is fine
  • Keep the whole black frame inside the scan area, with a little white margin around it.
  • A slight tilt is fine; Inkhue straightens the page.
  • Scanning from a PDF: import it in Inkhue; it is rendered at 600 dpi.
  • Phone photos are not supported yet — a flatbed scanner is needed for dot-level detail.

Writing on the page

Handwriting over the photo is fine (tested with 20 % of the picture covered) and stays in the recovered photo. Strokes across the frame are handled too, but keep writing away from the frame when you can.
