GitHub SSH Authentication

If you don't want to use HTTPS authentication with Personal Access Tokens (PATs), then the alternative is using an SSH key. The process is very straightforward.

Check for Existing SSH Key

If you have used the server before, an SSH key may already exist. Follow these instructions to check for an existing key.

If you already have a key, skip the following section and go to adding it to your GitHub account.

Generate a New SSH Key

Follow these instructions to generate a new SSH key.

Add SSH Key to Your GitHub Account

Follow these instructions to add your SSH key to your GitHub account. This will enable you to clone repositories without dealing with PATs.

Cloning Repositories via SSH

To clone a repository, you'll need to copy the SSH URL instead of the HTTPS URL which is the default. For example: SSH cloning URL
