Update: What Happened to My GitHub Account & Projects (May 2026)

Hey contributors,

I wanted to share a quick, transparent update about a temporary GitHub account issue that affected my repositories (including this one) over the past few days.

Quick Timeline

• ~May 25, 2026: My GitHub account (@jatinkrmalik) was temporarily restricted. All repositories, GitHub Pages sites, workflows, PRs, and issues became inaccessible.
• May 26: Partial access returned, but the account remained effectively shadowbanned - workflows wouldn’t run, Pages showed 404s, and visibility of PRs/issues was broken.
• May 28 (Day 3): After multiple support tickets, escalations, and community help amplifying the issue, GitHub fully restored the account.

All projects, including this one, are now back online and fully functional at https://github.com/jatinkrmalik.

What GitHub Support Found

The restriction was triggered because some repositories were created using a compromised GitHub CLI OAuth access token.

• GitHub revoked the compromised token and lifted all restrictions.
• No GitHub platform vulnerability was involved.

I’ve already taken these steps:

• Changed all passwords
• Revoked every token
• Cleaned up test workflows that may have triggered the flag

There is no action item on your side as source code wasn't compromised in any way.

Moving Forward

This has confirmed my plan to self-host live Git mirrors for all key projects so we’re never dependent on a single platform again. I’ll set these up this weekend and share a detailed, step-by-step guide (here and on X) so anyone can do the same.

Thanks for the suggestion and yes, I am planning redundant git mirrors after the May outage.

Codeberg is on the list. GitHub will stay the primary place for issues/PRs and CI for now; we’ll add a read-only mirror at codeberg.org/.../vocalinux and link it from the README once it’s syncing.
