Resource-Based XRP Burn Mechanism
Status: Draft Proposal
Category: Amendment
Summary
I would like to propose a change to the XRPL transaction fee system that would make fees depend more on the amount of resources a transaction uses.
The main idea is simple:
Simple transactions stay very cheap, while transactions that use more network resources pay a higher fee. The fee would then be burned.
The goal is not to make normal XRP payments expensive. The goal is to make resource-heavy activity more expensive while increasing the amount of XRP permanently removed from the supply.
Why I think this could be useful
Right now, XRPL transactions are already very cheap, which is one of the things that makes the network attractive.
However, different transactions don’t necessarily place the same amount of load on the network.
I think it would be interesting to explore whether transaction fees could better reflect the actual resources being used.
For example, a simple XRP payment could remain close to the normal minimum fee, while a transaction that requires significantly more computation or changes a larger amount of ledger state would have a higher fee.
Proposed model
One possible model could be:
Burned Fee = Base Fee × Resource Multiplier × Network Load Multiplier
The exact formula would need to be designed and tested by XRPL developers. I don’t think the multipliers should simply be chosen arbitrarily.
The system could take into account things such as:
Fee burning
My proposal is that 100% of the transaction fee would be burned.
The fee would not be paid to validators as a reward. Instead, the XRP used for the fee would be permanently removed from the supply.
This would keep the fee mechanism focused on network protection while also creating a permanent supply reduction.
Keeping normal transactions cheap
This is an important part of the proposal.
I don’t think XRP should become expensive to use just because the network is busy.
The system should be designed so that ordinary payments remain inexpensive, while transactions that consume significantly more resources pay more.
There could also be a maximum fee specified by the sender, so a transaction cannot unexpectedly cost more than the user approved.
Network congestion
Another possibility is to include network utilization in the calculation.
When the network is operating normally, fees would remain low.
When the network is under heavy load, the cost of resource-intensive transactions could increase.
This could provide another layer of protection against spam and unnecessary resource consumption.
What needs to be researched
This is still an early proposal, and I would like feedback from people who understand the XRPL code and economics better than I do.
Some questions I think need to be answered are:
I would also like to see simulations using real XRPL transaction data before deciding on any specific numbers.
Possible next step
If the community thinks the idea has potential, I would like to work with XRPL developers and other community members to turn this into a more detailed XLS with an actual specification and implementation proposal.
I’m interested in hearing both technical criticism and alternative approaches.
This is an early idea, not a final specification.
