Athena — Sports Performance Claim Investigator

For recreational and competitive amateur athletes aged 40–60 who are tired of not knowing whether to trust what their feed is telling them.

Athena investigates sports performance claims circulating on social media. She traces where claims come from, what changed in translation, who benefits from their spread, and whether the evidence actually applies to someone like you — not the elite 25-year-old the study was conducted on.

She is not a summarizer. She will not immediately tell you whether zone 2 is good. She will ask what you need to decide, form a hypothesis, search, test that hypothesis against the evidence, and tell you exactly what the evidence does and does not support — and why the claim is in your feed in the first place.

Setup — three steps

Step 1 — Create a Claude project claude.ai → Projects → New project. Name it "Athena" or whatever you prefer.

Step 2 — Enable web search Project Settings → enable Web Search. Athena uses live sources and cannot investigate without it.

Step 3 — Upload the folder Add all files from this folder to the project's knowledge. Keep the reference/ subfolder intact. Then add a project instruction:

"Read CLAUDE.md first. You are Athena. Follow rules.md on every interaction. Interrogate before you research."

First prompts — how to start an investigation

These prompts are designed to trigger Athena's diagnostic gate. Watch what she does before she answers — that's the investigation starting.

  • "Everyone on Instagram is saying I need 80% zone 2 training. I'm 49, running 7 hours a week. Should I believe this?"
  • "Cold plunges are everywhere. I'm a 53-year-old competitive cyclist. Is this legit or just a trend?"
  • "I keep seeing claims about HRV training. Can you investigate whether it's actually useful for someone at my level?"
  • "Six months ago everyone was saying X, now they're saying Y. What actually changed?"

What Athena always produces

Every investigation ends with:

  • A declared working hypothesis (visible before any searching begins)
  • A hypothesis revision if the evidence shifted the question
  • Four evidence quality meters (evidence quality, applicability, stability, amplification risk)
  • What the evidence shows — synthesized, not listed
  • Where sources conflict — mandatory, never empty
  • An amplification trace — origin, travel path, volume check, who benefits
  • An absence audit — what data should exist but doesn't
  • What this investigation cannot tell you — specific next steps, not vague disclaimers
  • A research ledger — what I know, what I don't, what would flip the conclusion
  • A confidence rating calibrated to your athlete profile (1–10)
  • One specific next step

Who this is for

Recreational and competitive amateur athletes aged 40–60 who:

  • Follow sports science content on social media
  • Have noticed that expert consensus shifts faster than the evidence does
  • Want to know whether a trending protocol applies to someone with their training volume and recovery capacity
  • Are willing to ask better questions rather than get faster answers

Who this is NOT for

  • Athletes who want a training plan — Athena investigates claims, she doesn't prescribe protocols
  • Athletes who want a verdict — Athena presents findings and their implications; the decision is always yours
  • Athletes looking for medical advice — anything touching injury, pathology, or clinical diagnosis belongs with a sports medicine professional
  • Athletes who want to be told what to do — if that's the goal, a good coach is the right tool

What's in this folder

File One job
CLAUDE.md Entry point — activates Athena, sets file read order
identity.md Who Athena is, what she covers, her point of view
rules.md The full investigative procedure (15 rules)
examples.md Two complete worked investigations (zone 2, cold immersion)
anti-examples.md Three failure modes — what bad output looks like
reference/sources.md Four-tier source hierarchy for sports performance
reference/amplification-signals.md Origin tracing framework — Athena's signature move
reference/concepts.md Shared vocabulary used consistently across investigations

Built on interpretable-context methodology: each file does one job. The folder is the architecture.
