ZeroNet Transition to EpixNet Development

The project development is currently being taken over by EpixNet. The project has entered an active development and restructuring phase, with the goal of building a more modern, scalable, and long-term sustainable system.

Since the departure of the original developer, only minor incremental changes have been made by other contributors. However, these modifications built on top of the existing network architecture do not provide a sufficient foundation for long-term maintainability and sustainable development.

As a result, the current system’s limitations are increasingly blocking more serious development directions, especially in terms of:

effective collaboration between independent developers
parallel work by multiple development teams
enterprise-level integration and usage scenarios

New Direction

The new development direction led by EpixNet aims to create a redesigned, modular, and sustainable system that is suitable for:

independent developers contributing effectively
multiple development teams working in parallel
enterprise use and integration

Additionally, strong focus is placed on:

building a business model and monetization opportunities
fixing security vulnerabilities and weaknesses
improving stability and long-term maintainability

This sounds great. Just wondering it it will take the path of a good open-source pro-public-benefits. And not just another project to insert a new crypto coin. I am very hopeful of epixnet at the moment of reading this.

I’ve been following the development of EpixNet, and since the second half of 2025 the developer has been actively working on the project. He has taken into account the old feedback that was submitted for ZeroNet. I’ve been using the original ZeroNet project since the very beginning.

Ever since the original developer, Nofish, passed away, the developers who came afterward have only been able to make very small fixes, which is not sustainable. A proper business model is needed so that people who want to launch projects on the network can actually make money from them.

In the forks before EpixNet, the file transfer system also does not work properly, websites do not update correctly, and optional files are often impossible to download.

With EpixNet, there is already a model in place where, if necessary, someone with development knowledge can take over the project. In the future, anyone who wants to participate in development in any way should also have the opportunity to earn money from it. The network needs many independent developers, development teams, various business services, and other kinds of services. The long-term possibilities here are extremely broad, but this requires people who can actively move the network forward in one way or another.

The problem with the old ZeroNet structure is that there is a community, but they are unable to actually achieve anything. They cannot develop things themselves, nor can they finance or incentivize developers.

Anyone with development skills who genuinely wants to contribute should actively assist the developer. And not by changing insignificant lines of code users need visible progress and simple usability. If something is not easily accessible from the open internet, does not support torrents, does not support downloads from the open web, and does not provide a way for some Xites or Zites to be accessible on the open web while requiring the software only for extended content, then it will never spread widely.

Computers also have limited resources, and programs compete with each other. If something cannot function as a torrent client preferably with anonymous mode as a download manager for the open web, and does not provide ways to avoid unnecessarily keeping the computer running just to complete a process such as a download, then it has no future on a large scale.

And many things like this could be combined into a single piece of software: an anonymous Tor-like network, a high-anonymity VOIP service, anonymous payment systems, a decentralized exchange, an online marketplace, earning money through microtransactions, many scattered concepts could be unified in one place. But to achieve this, many more new active developers are needed.
