I feel bad requesting this one due to the rather major and impressive system you worked out in the wild west of chat formatting when hex support was brand new and everyone had their own formats. Since then, MiniMessage has emerged as the prevailing standard, built into Paper and supported by most major plugins anymore. Due to the recent struggles with formatting, I wonder if moving to the more standardized system would be less work for you in the long run. It would definitely be easier on players, since currently ours at least need to learn 2 formatting systems (our wiki page as example) and frequently get confused with the two. And sure, it would be a significant transition, but it really would be a lot easier.

Minimessage also adds many options that CMI doesnt have, like disabling shadows, item icons in chat etc
