This contains the contents of PR #427 (at fdd80da; I'm keeping the full commit history around in that PR for future reference), which Andrii originally wrote a few months ago based on the ably-js path-based API changes (ably/ably-js#2134), and which more recently went through review and subsequent alterations by Sachin and I.
