EVEMon → EveLens: New Direction, New Name
This fork is moving in a new direction and getting its own identity. I want to explain what happened, why, and what it means for you.
How We Got Here
It started with Issue #17 — EVEMon crashing with less than 100 characters. Fixing that crash meant understanding why the app couldn't scale. That meant tracing through the event system, the scheduler, the memory management, and the architecture underneath.
One thread pulled another. The crash fix led to the event system. The event system led to the assembly split. The split enabled testing. Testing revealed the scheduler was broken. Every fix revealed the next problem until the application had been fundamentally restructured.
What Changed
EveLens now runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux. That's the first time in 20 years that this tool has worked on anything other than Windows.
The entire UI has been replaced. WinForms is gone. EveLens uses Avalonia now, with 6 dark theme palettes inspired by EVE's factions — Dark Space, Caldari Blue, Amarr Gold, Minmatar Rust, Gallente Green, and Midnight.
The Issue #17 crash is gone. The old scheduler polled every endpoint on a timer and it just couldn't keep up. The new one uses a priority queue with per-character rate limiting and phased cold start. I've tested 17+ characters simultaneously with live updates and its been stable.
ESI Scope Control is something the community has asked about for a while now. You can use your own ESI keys and control exactly which scopes are requested. Don't want EveLens reading your mail? Turn it off. There are three presets — Full, Standard, and Skill Planner Only — plus fully custom scope selection per feature group. When you re-authenticate with fewer scopes, EveLens automatically clears data it no longer has permission to access. No stale data sitting around from scopes you revoked.
The Plan Editor has been redesigned as a multi-tab editor with integrated ship, skill, item, and blueprint browsers. The attribute optimizer shows you exact time savings from remapping. Click any ship, see what you need, hit Plan to Fly. Its how I always wanted skill planning to work.
Skill Constellation is probably my favorite thing I built. Its a GPU-accelerated interactive visualization of all 400+ skills. You can see how skills connect to each other, what you've trained, where to go next. Zoom in, pan around, search for a skill, click to inspect. Think of it like a star map but for your skill sheet.
Character Groups let you organize your characters into named groups — PVP alts, industry toons, market traders, whatever makes sense to you. No more scrolling through a flat list of 30 characters trying to find the one you want.
Native Notifications push OS-level toasts for skill completions on all three platforms. You'll know when a skill finishes even if EveLens is minimized.
And there are now over 1,500 automated tests up from 23. The architecture is enforced by CI so it cant regress even if I wanted it to.
Why the New Name
At this point calling it EVEMon just misrepresents what you're actually getting. The UI framework is different. The architecture is different — 13 assemblies up from 2. The feature set is different. The platforms are different. It needed its own identity so I'm calling it EveLens.
What Stays the Same
Free and open source. Always. GPL v2. No paywalls, no subscriptions, no premium tiers. The source code is public and it stays public.
EveLens is built on the foundation created by EVEMonDevTeam, Peter Han, and 57+ contributors over 20 years. Every single contributor is credited in the app's About window. That history matters to me and its preserved.
Other EVEMon Forks
If you prefer a traditional EVEMon experience on Windows, the community fork maintained by InfinitasX (mgoeppner/evemon) continues to be available. Different approaches, same goal — tools for EVE players.
Give It a Try
EveLens alpha is available now at evelens.dev. Windows, macOS, and Linux.
Its alpha software so there will be rough edges. If something breaks please report it — file an issue here on GitHub with what happened and I'll fix it fast. I mean that. Bug reports are honestly the most valuable contribution you can make right now.
I get the most satisfaction from knowing people actually find this useful. If EveLens helps you plan your skills, manage your characters, or just makes your 3am multiboxing sessions a little easier on the eyes — thats why I built it. Thats all I need.
Fly safe. o7
