How does one use a androidx.media3.datasource.cache.Cache, e.g. SimpleCache, with androidx.media3.inspector.FrameExtractor?

When looking at the new de-facto standard way to extract frames from a video source I saw no apparent way to link it to the cache used for playback. Is this intentionally missing or a future improvement?

It would have been useful to know the version of Media3 you're using, but I'm guessing you're on 1.9.0.

We have added an option to allow setting the MediaSource.Factory on the FrameExtractor instance. This change is already part of 1.10.0-alpha01, but if you want to use the stable version, you would need to wait until 1.10.0 is fully released.

You can link the FrameExtractor to the cache by setting up MediaSource.Factory like this:

// 1. Create a CacheDataSource.Factory that uses your cache
DataSource.Factory cacheDataSourceFactory =
    new CacheDataSource.Factory()
        .setCache(simpleCache)
        .setUpstreamDataSourceFactory(new DefaultHttpDataSource.Factory());

// 2. Create a MediaSource.Factory that uses the CacheDataSource.Factory
MediaSource.Factory mediaSourceFactory =
    new DefaultMediaSourceFactory(context)
        .setDataSourceFactory(cacheDataSourceFactory);

// 3. Pass this factory to the FrameExtractor.Builder
FrameExtractor frameExtractor =
    new FrameExtractor.Builder(context, mediaItem)
        .setMediaSourceFactory(mediaSourceFactory)
        .build();
