GitHub Copilot provider broken

Description

Even after deleting cache and going through the auth flow and freshly authorizing github copilot as a provider, no models are found:

and the provider appears to not be connected:

Is there any way to use github copilot student plan on opencode anymore???

I can confirm this. On my work account (GitHub Enterprise) models are being listed, but on my personal free account, no model is shown. According to the link above, it should still be possible to use Auto and let Copilot decide which model to use for free or student plan users, but not sure how to select Auto model in OpenCode.

I had this same problem and had some painful back and forth with claude and eventually (sort of) solved it. I asked claude to summarise the solution and it gave the following (want to be open about it being AI):

Had this exact thing on 1.17.11. Two separate problems stacked on top of each other for me:

1. The provider doesn't auto-register even when auth succeeds — declaring it explicitly in config forces it to show up. Add this to your opencode.jsonc:

}

After that the models actually appear and opencode auth list shows it connected.

2. Heads up if you're on a student/free Copilot plan — since GitHub's March 2026 change, those plans can only self-select base models (gpt-4.1, gpt-4o, gpt-4o-mini). Premium ones like Opus/Sonnet/GPT-5 return "model not supported" because GitHub gates them server-side behind Auto mode, so no config will unlock them.

Declaring gpt-4.1 in config and using that got me working.
