json content a bit confusing

This:

has a couple options that have 'default' values but are also labelled there as 'required'. It makes no sense that something with a default value should be required by anything so what does 'required' mean? Is it 'required' that the option is passed to Fluent or is it required that the option is passed to launch_fluent or ??? Maybe the content of this json can be documented?
