Prefix for volumes

Is it possible to add a prefix to a volume name? e.g. -ROOT- or -DATA-

Short answer: No, there's no built-in config to add a custom prefix like -ROOT- or -DATA-. Those prefixes are hardcoded by CloudStack (ROOT-<instance-id>, DATA-<instance-id>) and aren't user-configurable.

Workarounds:

1. Rename after creation — Use the updateVolume API:

   updateVolume id=<volume-id> name=<new-name>
   

   Note: this only changes the CloudStack display name, not the underlying file on primary storage.

2. Custom ResourceNamingPolicy — CloudStack has a pluggable naming framework (since ~4.2), but it requires writing and deploying custom code. Not a simple setting.

3. Feature request — If you need this as a standard feature, opening a GitHub enhancement request for a configurable naming template (e.g., {prefix}-{type}-{id}) would be the right path. It doesn't exist today.

TL;DR — not possible out of the box; use updateVolume for one-offs or contribute a custom naming policy for systematic use.
