This PR is an updated PR from #88. It includes a number of changes that had been suggested and discussed and reviewed in separate pull requests.
Some of those changes are still in review, so this PR may be updated based on those, but hopefully this is much closer to something that is ready to accept.
This depends on new API being added to Jackrabbit, which is also in review.
