The issue was related to the version of slickgrid. Upgrading that to a newer version solves this problem. It is not the latest version of slickgrid, but the latest at the same minor version (from 2.3.3 to 2.3.23). slickgrid 2.4.x presents other challenges and would require a larger effort.
