New program won't overwrite older one

I just bought an Arduino Robot and when I connected it for the first time it worked perfectly, but when I tried to upload a new script, the arduino sketch said it couln't connect/upload to the selected board (I made sure it was the right board and tried again, but nothing changed). So I downloaded Ubuntu, and yes, it worked. But now there's another problem, the new program won't overwrite the older one. I tried resetting the Robot, but it had the same result.

Any suggestions?

Sounds like there might be multiple problems here. Also, this issue tracker is about tracking issues in the Arduino software and it seems likely that your problem is in the setup or the way that you're doing things. You might want to try asking on the Arduino forums as well.

In any case - something to try when uploading fails is to press the reset button shortly before uploading (around the same type you press the upload button, I think). Normally, the IDE will send a special signal to the Arduino, causing it to reset into the bootloader (a special piece of software that runs on power-on and reset, which takes care of handling the upload). While you cannot have accidentally overwriten the bootloader, you might have somehow broken the code that takes care of the reset. Hence, doing a manual reset works around this.

As for your final issue - the upload worked but the program didn't seem overwritten - I'm not sure how that would be possible. It seems more likely that you just didn't notice the upload actually failed, or perhaps made an error in your sketch that caused it to behave just like the old one?

The arduino sketch program said it was succesfully uploaded, so when it didn't work I tried uploading an example and nothing changed,it still ran the first program. I will try to press the reset button while uploading.

try enabling verbose output while uploading/flashing. the cause might become obvious. It's one of the checkboxes in the 'File --> Preferences' dialog box.
